Pianos on State is back! The painted pianos are available up and down State Street for musical exploration, impromptu play, and group performances. We’re proud to be a sponsor of this incredible community arts project.
Pianos on State represents a collaboration between the Santa Barbara Bowl, City of Santa Barbara, CAW, Santa Barbara Education Foundation, Office of Arts & Culture, Downtown Santa Barbara as well as other local business sponsors.
Artists safely gathered for piano painting at the Community Arts Workshop (CAW). The weekend of painting allowed artists of all styles and stripes to trade tips and information, foster a sense of community, and produce incredible pieces.
As a public arts program, it provides an opportunity for emerging and professional artists alike to showcase their work. The pianos become interactive pieces of art as painted by local Santa Barbara artists, and subsequently displayed on designated pads along State Street for the public to play.
This year’s piano artists include:
Giovanna Alyssandra; Jennifer Chan; Christian Hali; Mina Haitsuka; Katreece Montgomery; Mountain View Elementary School (with artist Mandy Philips); Permatint Collective: Alexis Zofia Kubicki, Aaron Latham, Shannon Nicholson, Scott Sanderfer, Sol Smalls, James Voyles, Dark Winterfire; Dez “Deadstxle” Porter; Brittany Ragan; Irene Rinta; Rik Stokes
The pianos made their debut on State Street on Tuesday, October 5, and will be on display until Friday, October 22. Pianos will be available for musical exploration, impromptu play and group performances from 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. for the duration of their display on State Street. Amateur, professional and public musicians alike are invited to sit down and play.
Community members are invited to submit videos of themselves playing to the Pianos on State Facebook page.
Ready to play? See the map to view the locations of the pianos. Happy playing!
